Late Sunday night it was being reported by multiple news outlets that David Ortiz, former slugger for the Boston Red Sox, was shot while out in his home country of the Dominican Republic.
He was taken to a local Santo Domingo hospital where nothing new has been reported as of yet. Here is where things get wild, however. As it usually does, Twitter exploded with the news of the shooting, but not only in written form, but in video form as well.
WARNING: This video contains graphic footage.
Ortiz spent 14 seasons with the Red Sox where he was a three-time World Series Champion and was named to 10 All-Star Games. He’s likely to be a first ballot Hall of Famer and among the city of Boston’s most popular athletes, so it’s no surprise there was immediate outpouring of support from fans and fellow athletes alike.
Let me just say how unreal this is to see. It’s scary. It’s scary because a human being was just sitting there, conversing with people, and out of the blue he’s shot from behind for what seems like no particular reason. It’s scary because footage like this is right at our fingertips for all of us to see. I’m still not even sure if I liked sharing the video. There’s actually other videos on Twitter where locals have found the person that many are identifying as the shooter. The videos show him being beaten by several people.
