Andy Reid has been the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs since 2013, so we’re willing to bet he’s eaten his fair share of Kansas City barbecue – in fact, he’s probably an expert at this point. So, when the former Coach of the Year joined Guy Fieri on a new episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives this week to chow down on the town’s barbecue, it was a pairing we didn’t know we needed.
Fieri, who refers to himself as the Mayor of Flavortown, USA, met up with the 61-year-old coach at a local Kansas City spot called Pigwich, located in City Market, which is a butcher shop and a restaurant. Fieri even let Reid pick the spot. The duo went to the restaurant side and learned how the Big Pig, a pork tenderloin, smoked pork burger, jalapeno pickle, ranch, pepperjack and ‘nduja sandwich, is created. One look at that sandwich and you’ll be drooling in front of your screen and, spoiler alert, never take the fries away from Reid when he’s enjoying a sandwich – he won’t be happy .
The best part about this barbecue-loving duo is the fact that Fieri is a well-known Oakland Raiders fan and the Raiders face the Chiefs this week in an AFC West showdown with first place implications. That might be why Food Network decided to air this particular episode this week but Fieri does mention that Raiders coach Jon Gruden gave him permission to do the segment at which point Reid fires back jokingly with a hardy “Go Chiefs!” There had to be some sort of little wager on the game made between the two, right?
The chemistry between the two was fun and it’d be great to see these two team up for an episode bouncing around to some of Kansas City’s most recognizable barbecue joints, even as a YouTube mini-series. You can catch the complete episode by logging on to your cable provider through Food Network’s website. Former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar is also featured in a segment of the episode at a Massachusetts stop.
