Dock Street Brewery Celebrates ‘It’s Always Sunny’ With Appropriately Named Beer

For 13 seasons, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has found subtle ways to pay homage to the city with which it bares its name, even if some seasons haven’t been filmed in the City of Brotherly Love.  Those little things can be specific locations, paying tribute to fallen police officers or clothing that the cast wears – specifically Rob McElhenney’s character, Mac.

Since the shows inception on FX – it has since moved to FXX – all those years ago, Mac has worn all types of different t-shirts, one of which is from Philadelphia’s Dock Street Brewery.  It might have gone unnoticed to most, but if you go back and re-watch last season’s Old Lady House: A Situation Comedy episode, or this season’s premiere The Gang Makes Paddy’s Great Again epsiode, you’ll see it pretty clearly.  Well, don’t think the folks at Dock Street aren’t aware and they’re celebrating his t-shirt selection the only way they know how – with a beer.  That’s right, in conjunction with a screening the brewery is doing of the Season 13 finale, they’ve created The Gang Tried to Get Mac to Come to Dock Street, a limited-release, 5.5% ABV milk stout that’s available in 16-ounce cans.

Dock Street, which holds the title of Philadelphia’s first craft brewery, was established in 1985 by Jeffrey Ware and Rosemarie Certo.  It’s now located in the western section of the city, in a 110-year-old firehouse, and serves up seven staple beers, including the Man Full of Trouble Porter, which won bronze at the 2017 Great American Beer Festival.

The Gang Tried To Get Mac to Come to Dock Street will feature original artwork from Alexis Grant, which features an image of Mac in the brewery’s shirt.  But it’s not going to be an easy beer to get a hold of, with it set to be released a half hour before Wednesday night’s episode, though you can try to order some using the GoPuff app, which will deliver it right to your door.  Other breweries have had legal battles in the past for copyright infringement and Dock Street is well aware of the potential risk, posting on Instagram: “We might get a visit, we might get a lawsuit, but at least we’ll get a laugh.”

We call this one “The Gang Tries to Get Mac to Come to Dock Street.” For the past two seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mac has rocked a Dock Street Brewery t-shirt (also, sidebar: he’s pretty ripped now, just saying’), so in honor of the season finale we’re dropping a 5.5% ABV Milk Stout in 16oz cans with artwork by Alexis Grant. The beer will go on sale at 9:30pm, the episode will be playing on our projector at 10pm, and the kitchen will stay open till 10:30pm so come watch, eat and toast the best show on TV. • We might get a visit, we might get a lawsuit, but at least we’ll get a laugh, so come through and hang. If you can’t make it out to Dock Street, you can have the beer delivered to your couch – GoPuff will be the only retailer carrying this beer, so fire up your app and order some showtime refreshments.

It seems only fitting that the title of the finale is The Gang Wins The Big Game, which will revolve around last February’s Super Bowl victory for the Philadelphia Eagles.  There was no way McElhenney, a Philadelphia native, wouldn’t include the biggest sports moment in the city’s history.  And while we can’t imagine he makes a surprise appearance at Dock Street’s event, we hope a four-pack of those pounders somehow makes its way to him.
