Oat My Goodness: Dogfish Head Brewery’s Hazy-O Is Going Mainstream As The First Nationally Distributed Oat Milk-Centric IPA

Walk into practically any brewery in the country and you’ll find some sort of a hazy IPA, often brewed with oats and generous portions of hops – but no two are ever the same, from coast to coast.  Well, the folks over at Dogfish Head Brewery wanted everyone across the country to enjoy the same hazy goodness and created Hazy-O!, the very first nationally distributed oat milk-centric IPA.

Available now wherever you find Dogfish Head’s off-centered beer, Hazy-O! is brewed with four different types of oats – malted oats, rolled oats, naked oats and oat milk – for an incredibly smooth and refreshing taste.  It’s also dry-hopped liberally, with a variety of hops, making for an incredibly juicy profile that highlights strong tropical notes like mango and pineapple on both the nose and flavor.  Never one to back away from attempting next-level beer with the highest ingredients, founder Sam Calagione and his crew spent nearly a year of Research and Development perfecting Hazy-O! and the end result is a beer at the intersection of two unique and complementary trends.

“While Hazy-O! features a bunch of high-quality culinary ingredients, it’s the oats that are really the star of the show,” said Calagione, Founder of Dogfish Head.  “Each of the oat formats used in Hazy-O! provides a unique characteristic to the beer. The malted oats offer a delicate malty sweetness; the rolled oats contribute a dense haze; the naked oats provide a subtle toasty, caramel character; and the piece de resistance, oat milk, creates a silky soft mouthfeel that makes Hazy-O! drink like a 5.0% ABV session sipper, instead of the 7.1% ABV powerhouse that it is.  This foundation-of-four oat formats creates a target, allowing the beer’s bright and juicy hops to hit the flavorful bullseye.”

Each of the oats offers a different characteristic to the beer, with malted oats adding a delicate malty sweetness, the rolled oats adding a dense haze and the naked oats adding a toasty, caramel character.  But the Delaware-based brewery’s not so secret ingredient – well, it’s Unsweetened Milked Oats, a blend of just oats, water and a little salt.

Helping give this effort a silky soft, creamy mouthfeel, the oat milk comes from Elmhurst 1925, a family-owned milk-producer from just outside of Buffalo and not only does their product make Hazy-O! so smooth, but also makes it a lactose-free and vegan option for craft beer lovers who can’t enjoy some IPAs. So, if you want a crisp and smooth hazy – whether you’re in California or New Jersey – every single time, look for the bullseye.

Hazy-O! is available in 12-ounce cans – track it down with Dogfish Head’s Fish Finder.
