On Monday Night Raw, WWE Universal Champion and one of the company’s biggest stars, Roman Reigns, revealed he was vacating the title he won at SummerSlam to battle leukemia.

During his in-ring promo on Raw, the former Georgia Tech defensive end, Reigns (real name Joe Anoa’i), revealed that he was first diagnosed with it 11 years ago but had been in remission ever since.

Reigns, a superstar who had the torched pass to him from John Cena as the face of WWE, has always had a divided crowd with a mixture of boos and cheers. However, on this night, it was nothing but cheers and tears from the fans in attendance.

“I’m not going to lie, I’ll take every prayer you can send my way,” Reigns said. “But I’m not looking for sympathy. I’m not looking for you to feel bad for me because I have faith.”

He was adamant that this wasn’t a retirement speech and at 33, he has ever intention of beating cancer and coming back to WWE. And as a result of his public reveal, Reigns is already helping to raise awareness and funds to fight leukemia.
