Three years ago, Babsocks – blue socks featuring the face of Toronto Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock – were dreamt up by two fans in a locker room somewhere around the Toronto area. Within weeks, the apparel began to catch some steam and was featured on various news outlets throughout Canada and the United States. We’re pretty sure even Babcock owns a pair of the socks. Since then, the duo has been looking to create a new splash in customized footwear, much like the Babsocks, and it looks like they’ve done it.
Jake Mednick and Tom Cole are now launching Sockey Hall of Fame, a line of socks featuring the faces of some of the National Hockey League’s greatest alumni, who are enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. From Mats Sundin to Lanny McDonald to Stan Mikita, the two business owners have caught the eye of the NHL Alumni Association, with a full partnership that includes 15 teams already agreeing to sell them in arena team stores. Those teams include the Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins and Los Angeles Kings. Their eventual goal is to have 150 former players’ mugs on the line of socks – but the best part is that these socks will also help a good cause, with most of the proceeds being redirected towards helping NHL alumni in need.
According to a recent article in The Athletic, Mednick and Cole sold approximately 400,000 of the Babsocks over the last three years and this time around they’ll will produce about 50,000 for the first trial run, a number that will likely be eclipsed with ease. The socks will be available under the duo’s new company, My Fanchise, and they can be preordered via their website for 15 percent off now. The socks are made up of 80 percent combed cotton, 15 percent nylon and five percent lycra, with a hand-linked toe for added comfort and toughness – and one size fits all for both men and women.
Other players currently available include Bernie Parent, Paul Bissonnette (to help promote the apparel), Bob Probert, Brett Hull, Cam Neely, Doug Gilmour, Jean Beliveau, Joe Sakic, Johnny Bower, Johnny Bucyk, Luc Robitaille, Mario Lemieux, Pat Lafontaine,Pavel Datsyuk, Peter Forsberg, Ray Bourque, Ron Hextall, Teemu Selanne, Terry O’Reilly and Wendel Clark. More will be coming pretty soon, per their website.
Apparently, Sundin has already requested 50 pairs be shipped to his home in Sweden, so if that’s any indication, you might see a lot of these socks. They’re the perfect compliment to any game day outfit, because who doesn’t want Neely’s head on their ankle?
