Despite having already leaked, the GoPro Hero 9 Black arrived this week and features “more everything” – from a new sensor that delivers 5K video to an even larger front-facing display. The latest iteration of the action camera, which was popularized by the California-based company back in 2002, features tons of new things to make capturing whatever you’re doing as beautiful as possible.
For starters, the GoPro Hero 9 Black features a 20MP image sensor to shoot photos and videos at up to 5K resolution and 30FPS, along with 4K, 2.7K, 1440p and 1080p settings. It also comes with a larger, 1.4-inch front color screen to not only help display useful recording information but also offer a live preview of your recording. There’s a bigger rear LCD screen as well, enlarged to 2.27 inches with a 30-percent touch zoom, so almost the entire back is now just a display screen. Creating a larger screen was possible because the GoPro Hero 9 Black is 2.76 x 1.93 x 1.3 inches, compared to the smaller 2.61 x 1.91 x 1.12 inches of last year’s Hero 8 Black version.
But a camera is only as good as the battery power and, according to GoPro, the company imported the larger batteries for the Max 360 into the Hero 9 Black to give it 30 percent more battery life than previous iterations. A 1,720 mAh battery should likely provide two to three hours of shooting. Speaking of shooting, the Hero 9 Black marks the return of removable lenses, that way you don’t have to buy a whole new camera if you scratch up the front of it crashing on your dirt bike. There’s even a lens modification, Max Lens Mod, for enhanced Max HyperSmooth – which the company claims is better than ever – video stabilization, allowing the user to lock in the horizon line even if the camera is spinning in the air, basically making everything look completely level.
Perhaps the coolest new shooting feature, however, is HindSight. It captures 30 seconds of footage even before the user hits the record button, so you are never late to capturing a moment, because we’ve all scrambled to hit that button before. And did we mention the Hero 9 Black is also a webcam? That’s right, all you need is the proper USB cable, and to download the GoPro desktop app, and you’re good to video chat online.
GoPro Hero 9 Black is available for $449.99, or $349.98 with a subscription to GoPro.
